Success Despite the Odds: A Study of Poor African American Youth from Early Adolescence to Young Adulthood
Description
The purpose of this proposal is to extend the study, "Success Despite the Odds." This study includes a rich set of qualitative and quantitative data collected from poor African-American adolescents and their families and schools. Two waves have been collected: Wave 1 during the middle school transition (sixth grade) and Wave 2 during the high school transition (ninth grade). School record data were also collected from fourth grade to ninth grade (i.e. grades, achievement tests, absences, and suspensions).
Now, one-year post-high school, we are proposing to collect school record data from tenth grade to twelfth grade and conduct telephone interviews with the target individuals about their educational attainment and employment.
This will allow us to examine how earlier experiences with families and peers and in schools and communities influence academic trajectories from sixth grade to twelfth grade as well as post-secondary education and employment.
